Maldives

Christmas is coming and things are as busy as usual in the world of SKK lighting. Shiu-Kay, Jon and TT have gone off to the Maldives to light up a “boatel” (boat hotel). This has left an interesting situation where James and I have been left in charge of things at the store. Fortunately we will not be alone because we now have 2 French marketing students helping out. They are excellent workers and good fun to be around. Also, we should have Liliana and Chris chipping in keeping the company running like clockwork.

Anyway in other news our animal lights are disappearing quicker than we can ship them in for the Christmas rush! We should be getting a new shipment in soon this week but I highly recommend phoning in now and reserving them.

Halloween and other antics

Halloween has just passed us and we have noted that people are really liking the front of our store with our Halloween themed front. Customers were very enthusiastic about buying our Paper Micros Lights with Halloween themes like pumpkins, skulls and alien heads. We did however get one lady who came in requesting Daisy paper heads for her baby also called Daisy which was nice. The light however that cause the biggest stir this week was our skull lights. One of us even spotted our Skull lights in the window of a reception of a company in the middle of Soho.

While making a display for the window one of our students swears that when he was nailing down one of our spider lights for the front display of the store it jumped at him! Surprisingly this is the same student who has also helped us make this product available online on Amazon for us! Hopefully we should be able to put more of our items online and we will tell you when we have it all online.

Anyway with Halloween over we are now looking forward to making a new display.

Sir Michael Gambon, Cadbury and Brunel

So much has been happening at SKK that I’m not even certain that I could cover half of it in one blog post. So I’ll just give you some of the highlights.

For starters the biggest news is that we pretty much have a whole new workforce powering SKK. A bunch of placement students from Brunel University have invaded the store and are now under the watchful eye of Shiu-Kay. Each one having slightly different skills and strengths and each ones becoming valuable members of the team, but that’s not all! We are currently repairing a lamp but not just any lamp it belongs to Sir Michael Gambon!

Apparently Sir Michael Gambon just popped in one day and left his lamp here at SKK and requested us to fix it. We poked and prodded it and the project is still on going. We will keep you posted as the story unravels and we have no intentions of letting him down!

Also this week a film company came in asking for help. Apparently their lighting crew arrived with no lighting equipment! They were filming on Carnaby street and had something to do with bringing the Cadbury’s bunny back, either way the filming had to be done today. So we raided our store room and even went as far as borrowing a long ladder from a construction site so we could pull out a bulb from the front of our own shop. By the end of the day whole team making lights for them it honestly looked like Santa’s workshop on that day with the whole team chipping in. the production team seemed happy and hope that they got the shots that they needed.

As a final highlight we have just discovered the fun of EL wire and are currently developing a new product with it to sell within the next couple of months in our store.

Recent Projects... take a look

Over the past months we have been busy working on many projects world wide.

Client : Griff Rhys Jones

Location : Pembrookshire

A location that would firstly be used for filming, then to be rented as a designer appartment. Baring this in mind we retro fitted recycled stage lamps with a dimmable, warm white LED to allow the client to add and remove lights as they please.
With two retro High Bay fittings as pendents this space was completely transformed into a sleek modern living space.

Client : Anna Lou

Location : Carnaby Street

Client : Residential

Location : London

A complete rebuild, this house is now over 90% LED, saving huge amounts of energy. Utilising solar energy added to this.
Using a 8w Dimmable LED downlight allowed us to create different moods and scenes as the client wanted mainly ceiling lights.

We can customise just about anything. This copper pendant was brought to us from Morroco. We modified it into a light. now it fits beautifully into this interior.
